Dhaval Lakshmi, an Olive Ridley turtle, embarked on an astonishing journey of 3,500 kilometers across the Arabian Sea, returning to Indian waters after nearly reaching the coast of Oman. Released from the Dahanu Turtle Rescue Centre in Maharashtra, she is the only one among eight tagged turtles to take such a lengthy and deep-sea route. Initially rescued in August last year after being injured in a fishing net, she underwent rehabilitation and was released on November 20 with a satellite tracker. Her journey began by swimming southwest towards Gujarat before venturing into deeper waters. By mid-January, she had traveled over 700 kilometers from Dahanu and was recorded about 160 kilometers off Masirah Island, a turtle nesting site in Oman. Despite hopes she might head towards Oman, she reversed direction and is now heading back towards Maharashtra. Wildlife experts view her journey as a success story, emphasizing the importance of wildlife rehabilitation and tracking for conservation efforts.
