Google has introduced an innovative fake call detection feature for Android, aimed at safeguarding users from the increasing threat of AI-driven impersonation scams. As fraudsters leverage deepfake technology to convincingly mimic voices of trusted contacts, this new feature is crucial for user protection. The system operates automatically when both the caller and receiver are using the Phone by Google app. It sends a silent confirmation signal to verify the legitimacy of the call through end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS). If a scammer attempts to impersonate a contact, the absence of this signal triggers a warning on the user's device, advising them to hang up. This proactive measure helps prevent falling victim to deepfake impersonation and call spoofing. The feature will be rolled out globally for Android 12+ devices, starting with Pixel models, and can be installed from the Play Store if not already set as the default app.
