Google has announced a new security feature called 'fake call detection' designed to help Android users identify AI-generated scam calls. Set to roll out this month on devices running Android 12 and newer via the Phone by Google app, this feature aims to protect users from scammers who use voice cloning technology to impersonate trusted contacts. The system operates by exchanging a verification signal through Rich Communication Services (RCS) during calls. If this signal is absent, the receiving device checks if the real contact is making the call. Should the verification fail, users are alerted to the potential scam. Initially, this feature will be available on Pixel smartphones, with plans to extend it to other Android devices. As the prevalence of voice-cloning scams rises, the importance of technologies that can authenticate callers is expected to grow, making it crucial for users to discern whether familiar voices are genuinely trustworthy.
