The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has announced a significant change in its selection process for the Indian boxing teams heading to the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. Following concerns over transparency and fairness, the BFI has scrapped the controversial assessment system introduced by former High Performance Director Bernard Dunne in 2023. Instead, the selection will now rely on trials scheduled from May 13 to May 15, 2023, at NS NIS Patiala. BFI Secretary General Pramod Kumar emphasized that the new process will utilize a five-judge scoring system for all sparring bouts, ensuring immediate score announcements to enhance transparency. The previous evaluation scores, which included parameters like strength and conditioning, have been declared null and void. Notably, finalists from the recent 2nd COAS Cup will not be eligible for the trials due to objections from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) regarding the event's closed nature. The BFI has indicated that it will consider an open trial if it wishes to include these medallists in the selection process.
