The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has announced it will oversee the selection process for boxers competing in the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games due to concerns raised about the Boxing Federation of India's (BFI) selection policy. A top SAI official stated that the BFI's current selection policy, which was issued in December 2022, violates the guidelines set by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS). The assessment will commence on Wednesday at the national camp in Patiala, Punjab, India, and will include strength and conditioning tests followed by sparring sessions. The BFI's selection policy has faced scrutiny, particularly regarding the inclusion of the COAS Cup as a qualifying tournament, which has been deemed a closed event contrary to the MYAS guidelines for fair selection. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the empanelment of coaches for the national camp, with SAI highlighting the lack of transparency in the BFI's hiring process. The assessment will focus on three Olympic weight categories for women and five for men, with the competition expected to be fierce.
