The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised serious concerns regarding the ₹202 crore (approximately $24 million USD) spent on clearing the Dadumajra garbage dump in Chandigarh, India. During a press conference at the party office in Sector-39, AAP leaders, including Councillor Hardeep Singh Buterla and former Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor, questioned the Chandigarh administration's waste management practices. They highlighted discrepancies in waste processing, noting that while the administration claims to process 286 metric tonnes of waste daily, there is no clear account for nearly 96 metric tonnes. Allegations suggest that waste is being dumped in low-lying areas of Punjab and Haryana instead of being properly managed. The party also raised alarms about the toxic nature of the compost produced, which contains heavy metals and poses health risks. AAP spokesperson Yogesh Dhingra criticized the BJP-led Municipal Corporation for failing to resolve the garbage issue despite 12 years in power, contrasting the situation with Indore, which cleared its garbage problem for just ₹16 crore (approximately $1.9 million USD) in one year. Dhalor added that a wall has been built to obscure the garbage mountain rather than eliminate it, and he emphasized the need for accountability as the High Court has mandated waste disposal completion by May 2026.
