On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the 'Aftercare Scheme for Young Persons' to assist youth transitioning from childcare institutions and orphanages at age 18. The scheme offers support for higher education, vocational training, and independent living, addressing the challenges faced by 150 to 200 young adults annually. Gupta emphasized the importance of structured assistance, noting that many lack family support and face difficulties in securing employment and managing finances. The initiative is backed by the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and includes provisions for mentorship, counselling, and financial support. A state aftercare committee will be established to monitor the scheme's implementation and assess individual needs. Currently, Delhi has 88 Child Care Institutions that provide care and support to children until they turn 18.
