A recent study conducted by researchers at Trinity College Dublin and Technological University Dublin has revealed that Grokipedia, the AI encyclopedia created by Elon Musk, leans towards right-leaning sources when addressing sensitive topics like religion, history, and art. The study analyzed nearly 18,000 edited English-language Wikipedia pages and their Grokipedia equivalents, finding that Grokipedia's articles referenced more right-leaning outlets. Despite this, the overall political leanings of both platforms were similar. Notably, two-thirds of the Grokipedia articles were heavily rewritten and relied on fewer sources than those on Wikipedia. These findings echo earlier concerns, as a previous study noted a left-leaning bias in Grokipedia but also highlighted instances of right-leaning content on controversial issues. The European Commission has initiated an investigation into Musk's xAI under the Digital Services Act to assess potential dissemination of illegal content. The study raises alarms about the lack of transparency and accountability in AI-generated content, contrasting it with the visible and contested biases found in human-edited platforms like Wikipedia. Researchers warn that the rapid growth of AI knowledge systems poses governance challenges similar to those seen in social media, where misinformation can have significant real-world consequences.
