As Panchkula, Haryana, approaches its municipal corporation elections, the state of its roads has taken center stage in political discussions. Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holding power in previous terms, many roads remain in disrepair, with residents expressing frustration over unfulfilled promises made during the last elections. The BJP has vowed to spend ₹50 crore to transform sector roads into 'model roads', while the Congress party has also included road reconstruction in its manifesto. Residents like Mohit Gupta from Sector 25 have reported that recarpeting work has been abandoned, leaving roads in poor condition, while others have highlighted the dangers posed by potholes and waterlogging. The municipal corporation's executive engineer, Sumit Malik, indicated that repair work is currently on hold due to the election cycle, although the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority claims that 80-85% of recarpeting work has been completed. Meanwhile, the industrial area is facing challenges, prompting the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation to allocate ₹22 crore for repairs. The situation underscores a significant gap between political promises and the reality faced by residents and commuters.
