On Wednesday, 25 sarpanches and representatives from nearly 50 villages in the Sahnewal Vidhan Sabha constituency, Punjab, submitted a memorandum to the Ludhiana deputy commissioner demanding an immediate stop to illegal mining activities. Led by Pritpal Singh Baliawal, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the group expressed their frustration over the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) failure to fulfill promises to end illegal mining. Baliawal highlighted the fear among residents due to large-scale mining operations occurring near residential areas and agricultural land. He warned that if the illegal activities continue, villagers and BJP workers will initiate a permanent protest. Furthermore, he raised concerns about the potential for flood-like situations during the monsoon season if mining near river areas remains unchecked, which could endanger surrounding communities.
