In an effort to enhance accountability and address ongoing issues with waterlogging, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will introduce robotic inspections for stormwater drains and chambers beginning June 15. This initiative comes in response to frequent complaints regarding contractors who falsely report the completion of cleaning work, despite visible issues during the monsoon season. Following a successful pilot project where robotic technology was utilized to inspect 19 stormwater chambers, PMC aims to conduct surprise inspections of 1,500 to 2,000 stormwater chambers and underground drains throughout the city. The civic body allocates significant funds annually for cleaning these drains, yet recent inspections revealed discrepancies between reported and actual work completed. By employing robotic technology, officials can obtain visual evidence from inside the chambers, thereby improving the verification process and ensuring that cleaning work is performed as claimed. A senior official from PMC's drainage department stated that this approach will significantly strengthen monitoring of contractors and enhance the overall effectiveness of the cleaning operations.
