The Indian government has directed the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to resume wheat procurement in Delhi for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season, marking the end of a four-year hiatus. This decision follows a request from Delhi's Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, who highlighted that the lack of local procurement was forcing farmers to sell their wheat below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), negatively impacting their incomes. Procurement operations will commence on April 24, 2026, at the FCI depot in Narela and Najafgarh mandi, allowing farmers to sell their produce closer to home. Approximately 21,000 farmers in Delhi, who cultivate about 29,000 hectares and produce nearly 80,000 metric tonnes of wheat annually, are expected to benefit from this initiative. Farmers will need to present their Aadhaar cards, land records, and bank passbooks to participate in the procurement process. Chief Minister Gupta welcomed this decision as a crucial step towards prioritizing farmers' interests and reducing logistics costs associated with transporting wheat to other states.
