The Indian government has proposed an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to expand the definition of fuel to include higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel. The draft notification allows for ethanol blending of up to 100% (E100) and biodiesel up to 100% (B100). Vehicles manufactured after April 2023 will be compliant with E20 and capable of accepting ethanol blends up to 30%. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the need for India to achieve 100% ethanol blending to ensure energy self-reliance, especially in light of the ongoing energy crisis due to geopolitical tensions. Additionally, the government has permitted the use of ethanol in aviation turbine fuel (ATF), aiming for 1% blending by 2027, 2% by 2028, and 5% by 2030. This move is expected to reduce India's dependence on imported crude oil and aligns with international aviation standards.
