Akasa Air has officially launched its aircraft leasing unit, Akasa Air Leasing IFSC Pvt Ltd, at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) in Gandhinagar, India. This strategic move aims to bolster the airline's financing capabilities as it seeks to expand its fleet, which currently includes 38 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft out of an order for 226. The establishment of this unit is part of a broader initiative by the Indian government to create a domestic aircraft financing ecosystem, reducing the reliance on overseas leasing hubs like Ireland and Singapore. Priya Mehra, chief of governance and strategic acquisitions at Akasa Air, emphasized that GIFT City will play a crucial role in the airline's growth trajectory. Despite India's status as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets, local airlines often lease aircraft through foreign entities due to tax and regulatory advantages. The establishment of this leasing unit positions Akasa Air alongside other major carriers, such as Air India and IndiGo, in the evolving landscape of India's aviation finance.
