The Indian Ministry of Railways has sanctioned the expansion of the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System, an indigenous safety technology, across important routes in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, at an estimated cost of ₹362 crore. This initiative aims to enhance operational safety by preventing accidents and ensuring punctual train operations, particularly in adverse weather conditions. The project will cover 1,478 route kilometres, including significant sections in the Firozpur and Jammu divisions. The Kavach system automatically applies brakes in critical situations, protects against Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), and monitors speeding. The installation will also include communication infrastructure to ensure seamless operation. Specifically, 1,012 route kilometres will be covered in the Firozpur Division at a cost of about ₹241 crore, while 466 route kilometres in the Jammu Division will be enhanced for approximately ₹121 crore.
