Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), has raised concerns about the exclusion of individuals from welfare benefits following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Telangana. He criticized the practice of denying access to essential services like the Public Distribution System (PDS) based on whether a person's name appears on the voter list, especially when Aadhaar-based verification is available. Owaisi pointed out that individuals marked as 'absent' or 'shifted' during the SIR, as well as those who did not receive voter slips, are facing hardships. He emphasized that welfare schemes should be available to all eligible citizens and not contingent on voter registration, arguing that this approach disproportionately impacts marginalized groups such as the poor, women, Scheduled Castes, and Muslims. Owaisi has been actively engaging with residents in his parliamentary constituency, promoting participation in the SIR and clarifying the registration process for non-resident Indians. The AIMIM has launched awareness initiatives and established help desks across Telangana to facilitate the electoral roll revision.
