On Thursday, US President Donald Trump announced the lifting of tariffs on whisky from Britain, in a gesture of goodwill towards King Charles during his state visit. This decision comes as part of efforts to strengthen the trade relationship between the US and the UK, particularly in light of the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. Trump praised King Charles and noted that the removal of tariffs would facilitate better trade, especially regarding the wooden barrels used in whisky production. British trade minister Peter Kyle hailed the announcement as beneficial for the Scotch whisky industry, which contributes nearly £1 billion (approximately $1.3 billion USD) in exports and supports thousands of jobs in the UK. Diageo, the world's largest spirits producer, also welcomed the news, which led to a 3% rise in its shares. Buckingham Palace conveyed King Charles' gratitude for the decision, emphasizing its significance for the whisky sector.
