Following the release of Class 12 results by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on May 13, 2023, students have raised concerns over the evaluation process, particularly regarding the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. Many students reported feeling that their performance in subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry was undervalued, especially those who scored highly in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main but received lower marks in the CBSE board exams. In a media briefing on May 17, CBSE acknowledged a slight decline in both the overall pass percentage and average scores this year. Sanjay Kumar, Secretary at the Ministry of Education, noted that cut-off marks for key subjects fell by 1-3 marks compared to previous years. While some subjects saw a decrease, others remained stable or improved. CBSE attributed the changes to evaluators strictly following a marking scheme that prioritizes conceptual understanding. The board reassured students that they could seek revaluation and verification to address any discrepancies in their scores. Overall, the evaluation process aims to ensure fairness and consistency in student assessments.
