India has announced a ban on sugar exports effective immediately, lasting until September 30, 2026, or until further notice. This decision, issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to stabilize domestic sugar prices and ensure adequate local supply. The export policy for sugar, including raw, white, and refined varieties, has been changed from 'Restricted' to 'Prohibited' under the International Trade Classification (ITC) codes 1701 14 90 and 1701 99 90. However, exemptions will apply for exports to the European Union and the United States under specific quota arrangements, as well as for sugar already in the export pipeline. The government has previously employed export controls to manage domestic supplies and mitigate food inflation, and this latest move is expected to tighten global sugar availability while prioritizing local consumption. The ban will automatically revert to 'Restricted' if not extended beyond the specified date.
