Amul and Mother Dairy have announced a ₹2 per litre increase in milk prices effective from May 14, marking the first significant revision in nearly a year. This price hike is primarily due to escalating procurement costs, expensive cattle feed, and rising transportation and packaging expenses. The dairy industry is particularly sensitive to these changes, as milk is a staple in the Indian food economy. Historical trends indicate that increases in milk prices typically lead to higher costs for related dairy products such as paneer, ghee, and curd. For example, after Karnataka's Nandini brand raised prices earlier this year, consumers saw paneer prices jump by nearly ₹30 per kg. Given that producing paneer requires 8-10 litres of milk per kilogram, any rise in milk procurement costs is likely to be passed on to consumers. Additionally, ghee prices, which are also heavily reliant on milk, may rise, especially ahead of the festive season when demand surges. The West Asia conflict is exacerbating these issues by driving up global crude prices, which in turn affects the cost of milk packaging materials. As a result, consumers can expect to see price increases in various dairy products, impacting everyday cooking, restaurant menus, and sweet shop offerings.
