The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a 10% reduction in water supply across Mumbai, effective from May 15, due to critically low levels in the city's reservoirs. Currently, the reservoirs hold 340,399 million litres, which is only 23.52% of the annual requirement of 1,447,363 million litres. This decision comes as the BMC anticipates a potentially weaker monsoon season, influenced by the El Niño and Indian Ocean Dipole phenomena. To mitigate the situation, the BMC plans to release an additional 147,092 million litres from the Bhatsa Dam and 90,000 million litres from the Upper Vaitarna Dam. The water cut will also apply to the Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporations and surrounding villages. Residents are encouraged to conserve water as the BMC monitors the situation closely and aims to manage resources effectively during this uncertain period.
