On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court stayed an order from the Election Commission of India (ECI) that directed the West Bengal director general of police to take preventive action against approximately 800 citizens labeled as 'troublemakers' ahead of the first-phase polling. The court, led by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, ruled that the police observer had erred in issuing a blanket directive that could infringe on citizens' fundamental rights. The stay on the order is effective until June 30, 2026, or until further notice. The petition, filed by advocate Md Danish Farooqui, argued that many individuals on the list are elected representatives, including MPs, MLAs, and local council members. The ECI defended its actions, stating that the directive aimed to ensure free and fair elections. Following the initial order, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel conducted visits to the homes of those flagged, warning them against potential involvement in electoral disturbances. Additionally, the ECI modified its earlier motorcycle ban, allowing two-wheelers for service providers and individuals with valid ID cards during polling hours.
