Chandigarh Mayor Saurabh Joshi has submitted a proposal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the declaration of the Chandigarh–Karoran–Tanda–Prempura–Gariran–Paploha–Bar Shalu Khurd–Jangeshu–Kasauli–Dharampur corridor as a National Highway under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. This initiative aims to address the severe traffic congestion affecting Chandigarh, a key transit hub for traffic between Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Haryana, and Delhi. The proposed corridor is designed to provide a direct and efficient route to Himachal Pradesh, significantly reducing travel time and alleviating pressure on existing routes such as Madhya Marg and the Panchkula–Pinjore–Dharampur stretch. Joshi emphasized that the Tricity region, despite its importance as an administrative and economic center, suffers from overburdened road networks, especially during peak tourist seasons. The corridor will feature advanced engineering solutions to enhance safety and sustainability, while also improving emergency healthcare access to institutions like the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. Furthermore, it is expected to stimulate tourism and serve as a reliable route during natural disasters. The Mayor highlighted the socio-economic benefits, including rural development and job creation, urging the Prime Minister for swift action on the proposal.
