On Monday, the Delhi High Court dismissed SpiceJet and its promoter Ajay Singh's plea to review a previous order mandating a deposit of ₹144 crore in a legal dispute with media baron Kalanithi Maran and Kal Airways. Justice Subramonium Prasad imposed a cost of ₹50,000 on both the airline and Singh for the unsuccessful plea. The court had initially directed SpiceJet to deposit the amount by January 19, 2023, against an admitted liability of ₹194 crore, later extending the deadline by four weeks. SpiceJet argued financial distress due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and offered commercial property in Gurugram as security. However, Maran and Kal Airways opposed the review, stating that the financial distress claims had already been considered and dismissed by the Supreme Court. The dispute originates from the transfer of ownership of SpiceJet to Singh in February 2015 amid the airline's financial crisis, where Maran and Kal Airways transferred their 35.04 crore equity shares, representing a 58.46% stake, for just ₹2. In May 2024, the court had previously set aside an arbitral award requiring SpiceJet and Singh to refund ₹579 crore plus interest to Maran.
