The Indian government has extended the tenure of Praveen Sood, Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for one additional year, now set to last until May 2027. This decision follows a meeting of a high-powered selection committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which also included Chief Justice Surya Kant and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who expressed dissent regarding the selection process. The extension aims to maintain continuity in the CBI's leadership, particularly in light of its ongoing anti-corruption initiatives. Under Sood's leadership, the CBI has successfully reduced its investigation backlog from 1,695 cases in 2020 to 1,048 cases in 2025 and has brought back 47 fugitives from abroad in 2025 alone. The agency has also registered a record 251 Interpol red notices during this period. Sood, a 1986 batch Indian Police Service officer from Karnataka, previously served as the state's Director General of Police. His leadership has been marked by significant investigations, including high-profile cases related to corruption and organized crime.
