Tracey Butchart, a curriculum design expert, points out that many learners, especially in mathematics, exhibit significant learning gaps that become apparent during exam preparation. She warns that the pressure of exams often results in students defaulting to memorization, which can lead to repeated mistakes and increased anxiety. To combat this, Reflective Learning has introduced Numerate, a platform designed to help identify and address these gaps for students in Grades 5 to 10. Butchart stresses that meaningful revision should focus on engaging with concepts, allowing students to apply their knowledge in various contexts. This approach encourages learners to reflect on their understanding and target specific weaknesses, moving away from the misconception that doing more math is the solution. Instead, students need to practice the right material at the appropriate level, ensuring they grasp foundational concepts.
