The Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 board exams, emphasizing its role in ensuring transparency and accuracy in evaluation. School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar stated that OSM has been part of the CBSE's evaluation process since its introduction in 2014, and its recent reimplementation aims to enhance flexibility in marking. This year, out of 98 lakh answer sheets evaluated, more than 13,000 were manually checked due to legibility issues. In response to concerns about a dip in the pass percentage, which fell by over 3 percentage points, the CBSE has reduced the re-evaluation fees to Rs 100 from Rs 700, and verification fees to Rs 100 from Rs 500. Students can also have specific answers rechecked for Rs 25 each. Kumar emphasized the importance of fairness in marking, assuring that the process is designed to prevent any student from feeling unjustly graded. The CBSE’s recent results showed an overall pass rate of over 85%, with private school representatives supporting the reforms for greater transparency and technological integration.
