Mahesh Patil, the main accused in the murder of Right to Information (RTI) activist Atamaram Patil, was arrested by Virar police in Dahanu, Maharashtra, as he attempted to flee the state. The murder, which occurred during an inspection of a quarry, is linked to ongoing disputes over illegal mining activities in the region. Atamaram Patil had previously lodged complaints against the Patil family's quarry operations, which had been halted by the revenue department due to local grievances. The attack resulted in Patil's death and serious injuries to a revenue officer. Police suspect that the murder was motivated by a longstanding feud, with Mahesh Patil having multiple legal cases against him since 2011. Authorities have now issued directives for inspections of all mines in the Vasai taluka, where 23 out of 38 registered mines are reportedly closed but continue to operate illegally, raising safety concerns among local residents.
