The Chandigarh Union Territory education department has established a five-member committee to enforce the School Bag Policy, 2020. This policy aims to limit school bag weight to 10% of a student's body weight, promote bagless days, and reduce homework for younger students. The committee, led by Deputy DEO II Renu Sharma, will conduct quarterly inspections and surprise checks to ensure compliance across all government and recognized private schools. Monthly reports will be submitted, with the first report due within 15 days. The initiative is part of a routine compliance exercise and aligns with the National Education Policy, 2020. The committee will also organize awareness sessions for school heads and teachers to facilitate better implementation of the policy, which was formulated by an expert group and circulated by the Union ministry of human resource development in November 2020.
