In West Bengal, the Supreme Court of India has directed that only doubtful voter cases will be reviewed by appellate tribunals. This decision comes after the deletion of 2.7 million names from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has established 19 appellate tribunals comprising retired judges to hear appeals from voters whose names were struck off. Voters are encouraged to check their status, as only those deemed doubtful will be called for hearings. The Supreme Court has also allowed voters cleared by these tribunals to participate in the upcoming assembly elections, provided their names are restored at least two days before polling. This initiative aims to ensure that affected voters have a chance to appeal their deletions. Notifications regarding hearing dates will be sent through Booth Level Officers, ensuring that voters are informed about their appeals.
