The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that Phase 3 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will commence from late May 2023, covering 16 states and three Union Territories. This phase will not include Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, with the schedule for these regions to be announced later based on weather conditions. The initiative aims to ensure that only eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls, addressing discrepancies noted in previous phases. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has urged all electors to participate actively in the enumeration process, which will begin with house visits by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) starting May 30. The SIR 3.0 exercise is expected to cover about 36.73 crore electors and will be conducted in stages, with final electoral rolls to be published between September and December 2023. Among the states involved, Maharashtra has the largest electorate with 9.86 crore voters, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. This revision follows the completion of SIR Phase 2, which covered nearly 59 crore electors across 13 states and Union Territories.
