Google's DeepMind division has announced a partnership with Fenris Creations, the developer of the popular sci-fi simulation game EVE Online, where it has taken a minority stake. This collaboration aims to utilize EVE Online's complex, player-driven environment to study artificial intelligence, focusing on aspects like long-horizon planning and continual learning. Fenris Creations, which recently rebranded after a $120 million buyout from South Korean publisher Pearl Abyss, will allow DeepMind to conduct controlled experiments in a specially designed offline version of the game. This setup will not disrupt the experience for existing online players. The partnership highlights the potential of gaming environments to serve as rich test beds for AI development, with DeepMind's Director Alexandre Moufarek expressing excitement about exploring new gameplay experiences and pushing the boundaries of AI in such a unique simulation.
