During a workshop on gender-based violence in Patna, Bihar's Director General of Police (DGP), Vinay Kumar, expressed serious concerns over the rising incidents of gang rape and the inadequate response from women police officers. He noted that gang-rape cases, which were once rare, have become increasingly common, reflecting a troubling societal tolerance for such acts. Kumar revealed that only about 2% of sexual harassment cases are reported in Bihar, largely due to police inaction and victim suppression. He criticized specific incidents involving women police officers, including a case where a victim was allegedly extorted for ₹9,000 (approximately $110 USD) for a medical examination. The DGP emphasized the need for police to treat victims with respect and compassion, warning that those who fail to do so should be removed from service. He also highlighted the importance of community engagement in combating gender-based violence, stating that societal attitudes must change to effectively address these crimes. Kumar's remarks come in the wake of various recent incidents, including a student murder linked to gang culture, underscoring the urgent need for reform in police practices and societal norms.
