In Ludhiana, Punjab, assistant sub-inspector Mahinder Singh and his son Gurjit Singh have been booked on charges of dowry harassment, criminal intimidation, and misappropriation of dowry articles. The FIR was filed by Sudarshan Kumar, whose daughter Ritu Chauhan married Gurjit Singh on February 14, 2024. Kumar alleges that despite assurances against dowry demands, the accused later sought a Scorpio car, a fixed deposit receipt worth ₹10 lakh (approximately $12,000 USD), and gold ornaments. The wedding reportedly cost around ₹50 lakh (roughly $60,000 USD), with cash and gifts given to Gurjit's family. Post-marriage, Ritu faced harassment over unmet dowry demands and was allegedly assaulted multiple times. The complaint also claims Gurjit was involved with another woman in New Zealand prior to their marriage, leading to disputes. After attempts at reconciliation failed, the case was registered. Investigating officer Sub-inspector Bibal Pal Kaur stated that the allegations are under examination.
