The Madras High Court has clarified that the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Marketing Federation Limited (TANFED) is a public authority under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. This ruling came as a response to a petition filed by P Jothibasu, who challenged the State Information Commission's (SIC) refusal to provide information regarding the varieties of fertilizers procured by TANFED. Justice V Lakshminarayanan stated that TANFED, appointed as a nodal agency by the Tamil Nadu government for the National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation (NAFED), undertakes crucial initiatives like the price support scheme (PSS) to aid farmers. The court emphasized that the information sought by the petitioner does not fall under any exemptions of the RTI Act, thereby allowing for transparency in TANFED's operations.
