Nagpur and the Vidarbha region are currently grappling with a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 47°C on the first day of 'Nautapa', a period traditionally known for its extreme summer conditions. On Monday, Nagpur recorded 46.5°C, making it the eighth hottest place globally. In a concerning development, authorities are investigating a series of suspected heat-related deaths, with five unidentified men aged between 33 and 55 found dead in various locations, including Kapilnagar and Wathoda. These individuals were primarily homeless or associated with the Government Beggars' Reception Centre. They were discovered unconscious in public areas, often wearing minimal clothing in an attempt to cope with the oppressive heat. Medical staff at Mayo Hospital pronounced all five dead upon arrival, and while autopsy results are pending, officials suspect that prolonged exposure to the extreme heat, dehydration, and starvation may have played significant roles in their deaths. Police are working to identify the deceased and have circulated descriptions in hopes of establishing their identities.
