Prada is set to launch a limited-edition range of sandals inspired by traditional Kolhapuri footwear, priced at β¬750 ($881) each. This move comes after the brand faced significant backlash in June 2025 for showcasing designs resembling Kolhapuri chappals at a Milan fashion show without acknowledging their origins. Following the controversy, Prada recognized the influence of Indian craftsmanship and initiated discussions with artisan groups for collaboration. The company plans to produce 2,000 pairs of sandals in the Indian states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, partnering with state-backed organizations to blend local craftsmanship with Italian technology. Additionally, Prada announced a three-year training program aimed at enhancing the skills of 180 artisans from eight districts known for Kolhapuri sandal-making. This program, conducted by two prominent Indian design institutes, will include structured six-month modules and provide artisans with the chance to visit the Prada Group Academy in Italy for further technical training. Tanu Kashyap, director general at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, emphasized the importance of elevating Indian traditional crafts on the global stage.
