Italian luxury brand Prada is launching a limited-edition collection of sandals inspired by traditional Kolhapuri footwear, with production set in Maharashtra and Karnataka, India. This decision comes after significant criticism in June 2025 for showcasing similar designs without crediting their origins. The backlash prompted Prada to engage with local artisans and acknowledge the heritage behind Kolhapuri chappals. As part of this initiative, Prada will produce 2,000 pairs of sandals and has introduced a three-year training program aimed at supporting about 180 artisans from eight districts known for Kolhapuri sandal-making. The program, which starts next month, will be delivered in six-month modules by two prominent Indian design institutes. Selected artisans will also have the chance to visit the Prada Group Academy in Italy for further skill enhancement. Each pair of sandals will retail for around €750 (approximately ₹68,000) and will be available in select Prada stores and online.
