In response to a significant shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) due to disruptions from the ongoing conflict in West Asia, India has successfully established around 527,000 piped natural gas (PNG) connections since March 2026. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), announced that infrastructure is being developed for an additional 260,000 connections. The LPG shortage has prompted over 42,000 consumers to surrender their LPG connections by April 23. With India sourcing approximately 90% of its LPG imports from West Asia, the government has increased total commercial LPG allocations to about 70% of pre-crisis levels. Additionally, state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) have sold over 1.78 million 5 kg FTL cylinders since April 1, with more than 81,000 sold on April 23, primarily for migrant laborers.
