State-owned fuel retailers in India are facing significant losses of ₹20 per litre on petrol and ₹100 per litre on diesel as retail prices have remained unchanged since early April 2022. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) confirmed there are no plans to raise prices, despite a surge in global oil prices, which have risen from $70 per barrel last year to an average of $113 this month. Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma emphasized that the government has prioritized price stability for consumers, dismissing reports of an impending price hike of ₹25-28 per litre after assembly elections. The government's recent measures included cutting taxes on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre to alleviate the burden of high oil prices on consumers. The stability in domestic prices contrasts sharply with international fluctuations, particularly following the recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have affected oil supply routes. Currently, petrol is priced at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 in the national capital, New Delhi.
