A hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has resulted in three fatalities among passengers. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed one case of hantavirus, with five additional suspected cases. The outbreak occurred while the ship was en route from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde. The first victim, a 70-year-old passenger, died on board, while his 69-year-old wife was evacuated to South Africa, where she later died in a hospital. A 69-year-old British passenger is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg. The WHO stated that hantavirus infections are often linked to exposure to infected rodents. They are facilitating coordination between national authorities and the ship's operators for the medical evacuation of two other symptomatic passengers. The MV Hondius, operated by the Dutch-based Oceanwide Expeditions, can carry around 170 passengers and has 70 crew members.
