From May 11 to May 15, a team from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) will conduct a pre-monsoon vector surveillance survey at Pune International Airport in Maharashtra, India. The three-member team will evaluate mosquito and vector activity within the airport and a 400-meter surrounding area, which is under the Pune Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction. This initiative is part of India's compliance with the World Health Organization's International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005), which require that international entry points remain free of disease-carrying vectors. The team, comprising Dr. Ajay Kumar Kumawat, Dr. Abhay Kumar Sharma, and Dr. Ved Prakash, aims to assess the effectiveness of vector control measures and identify potential breeding sites. Civic officials have been instructed to eliminate stagnant water, enhance anti-larval measures, and strengthen surveillance to detect and destroy mosquito breeding grounds. Dr. Rajesh Dighe, assistant health chief at PMC, emphasized the importance of maintaining a vector-free zone at airports to prevent disease outbreaks, especially with increasing international travel. The survey is expected to bolster preparedness for the monsoon season when mosquito breeding typically escalates.
