In light of the growing influence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in education, the Brookings Institution’s Center for Universal Education has conducted a yearlong global study to assess its potential risks and benefits. The findings reveal that the risks currently outweigh the benefits, particularly in terms of children's foundational development and well-being. The study involved consultations with over 500 stakeholders across 50 countries and a review of more than 400 studies. To address these challenges, the report proposes three action pillars: Prosper, Prepare, and Protect. Each pillar contains actionable recommendations for governments, technology companies, and educators, such as shifting educational experiences, co-creating AI tools with stakeholders, and promoting AI literacy. The report urges all involved parties to adopt at least one recommendation over the next three years to ensure that AI enriches rather than diminishes learning experiences.
