Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made a significant move in Tamil Nadu politics by claiming the right to form a government after his party secured 108 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections. This election marked a historic debut for the TVK, breaking the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Although the TVK did not reach the majority threshold of 118 seats, the party gained the support of the Congress, which won five seats, bringing their total to 113. In a meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Vijay presented a detailed letter containing the signatures of 108 MLAs endorsing him as the Chief Minister. He has requested to take the oath of office at 10 A.M. on May 7. The election results also led to the resignation of MK Stalin, the DMK Chief, who lost to TVK's VS Babu in Kolathur.
