In Dharwad district, Karnataka, India, the upgrade of three government high schools to pre-university colleges has stalled, leaving students in rural areas without access to higher education options. The schools earmarked for this transition are located in Koliwad (Hubballi taluk), Devikoppa (Kalaghatagi taluk), and Veerapur (Dharwad taluk). The School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) had approved the upgrades, but the necessary directives from the state government are still pending. Manjunath Dulikoppa, president of the SDMC, highlighted that about 450 students are enrolled at the government high school in Devikoppa, which boasts a 98% pass rate in the recent Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams. Dulikoppa emphasized the urgency of starting a pre-university college in the area to prevent rural children from being deprived of higher education opportunities. Currently, only one government pre-university college exists in Kalaghatagi, and the demand for admissions is increasing annually. Local representatives and parents are calling on the district in-charge minister to expedite the college's establishment. The Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan deputy project coordinator confirmed that a proposal for the colleges has been submitted to the government.
