On Tuesday night, Havildar Sharif Hossain Kazi, a 55-year-old senior officer of the Assam Police, was shot twice by suspected drug peddlers in the Diglang area of Jirighat, Cachar district, near the Assam-Manipur border. The incident took place during an anti-drug operation initiated based on intelligence about drug trafficking activities from neighboring Manipur. Kazi sustained severe injuries, with bullets hitting his abdomen, and was initially taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital before being airlifted to Guwahati for advanced treatment. Local allegations suggested that Kazi was sent alone and not in uniform, but Cachar's senior superintendent of police, Sanjib Saikia, refuted this, stating that a full team was deployed for the operation. The suspects managed to escape into the forest, and a search operation is currently underway. This incident highlights ongoing issues with drug trafficking in the region, which has seen similar confrontations in the past.
