Between January 1 and April 15, 2023, the Delhi Police registered 60,624 cases of public drinking, with 41% of these cases occurring in south Delhi. The police have directed stricter enforcement measures, particularly under Section 40A of the Excise Act, which addresses public drinking and nuisance. Over 55,840 notices were issued under this act, while 972 cases were recorded under the Delhi Police Act. The police identified 34 hotspots in south Delhi, leading to 12,549 cases, and 45 hotspots in south-east Delhi, resulting in 12,420 cases. Enforcement actions are not limited to offenders; police are also targeting vendors and middlemen who facilitate public drinking. The highest number of cases were reported outside shops, eateries, and parks, with some incidents occurring near highways, prompting the invocation of the Motor Vehicles Act. Police officials clarified that the high number of cases reflects stricter enforcement rather than an actual increase in public drinking incidents.
