Delhi, India, generates around 1,155 tonnes of plastic waste each day, but only 81.3% is processed, leaving 216.7 tonnes unprocessed daily, according to a government report dated March 16. The city has a processing capacity of 939 tonnes per day, with the remaining waste leaking into the environment or ending up in landfills. Despite the ban on single-use plastics initiated in 2022 and the introduction of plastic waste management by-laws in 2024, compliance remains low. As of March 2026, only 330 producers, 20 brand owners, and 420 processing units have registered with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). Incineration is the primary method for processing plastic waste, with four waste-to-energy plants capable of handling 7,250 tonnes per day. Additionally, Delhi is biomining its landfill sites to recover usable materials. However, challenges remain in enforcement and transportation of plastic waste, as highlighted by environmental activists. The city's struggle with plastic waste management reflects broader issues in India's waste processing systems.
