The 7th Annual Apple Conclave, held by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Shimla, focused on the pressing challenges facing apple farming in Himachal Pradesh. Discussions highlighted the impact of climate change, declining productivity, and the necessity for new technologies. Approximately 300 farmers participated, addressing the urgent need for a transition towards a science-driven and market-aligned apple ecosystem. Dr. Satish Kumar Sharma, director of horticulture for the Himachal government, stressed the importance of adapting to these challenges. Additionally, Adani Agri Fresh announced its initiative to launch digital mandis across its three controlled atmosphere storage units in the state starting next season. The conclave underscored the critical state of the apple sector, with CII's Sanjay Suri advocating for collaboration among policymakers, industry, and farmers to enhance the apple value chain. To combat rising pressures from climate change and imports, stakeholders emphasized the need for high-density plantations and improved market systems to maximize farmer value.
