Two leaders from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party in West Bengal were arrested on charges of extortion and corruption, according to police reports. Bappaditya Dasgupta, a sitting councillor representing ward number 101 in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was apprehended on Saturday by officers from the Patuli police station. Following his arrest, a crowd gathered outside the station, chanting slogans accusing him of theft. Dasgupta, who switched from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to TMC in 2010, has faced allegations of taking bribes from local residents for housing projects and was implicated in post-election violence against BJP members in 2021. Meanwhile, Sujoy Hazra, a former MLA from the Medinipur Assembly constituency, was arrested at Kharagpur railway station while attempting to evade capture. Hazra had been on the run since the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election results on May 4, with multiple accusations against him, including land grabbing and extortion. The police are continuing their investigations into both leaders' activities, indicating a significant crackdown on corruption within the TMC.
